Orphan Block Challenge

The Calico Capers Quilt Guild's Orphan Block Challenge comes to completion with ninety-four quilted place mats being donated to the Marquette County Meals on Wheels Program, a project coordinated with Amelia Cisewski.

An orphan block may be leftover from a finished project or perhaps an unfinished project. For the CCQG, many of the blocks came from Block of the Month activities, or some were sample blocks made by members and donated to the guild.

At the February 2017 meeting, guild members received a brown paper bag and a challenge: "Inside this bag is an orphan block.  Your challenge is to make it into a place mat.  The completed place mats are to be turned in by our August picnic, after which we will give to Meals on Wheels Programs. You may also make additional place mats using your own orphan blocks or scraps."

Members responded well to this challenge and there were over 40 place mats turned in at the annual picnic.  The orphans now had a home!  At Outreach workdays this fall, the guild continue to focus on making more place mats so that there would be enough for Meals on Wheels for Marquette County.  Along with additional fabrics from members and digging deep into the guild fabric stash, the goal was reached and on November 13 ninety-four placemats were presented to Meals on Wheels.

Spring 2018 saw an additional donation of placemats to Columbia County Meals on Wheels.
